Crimes of Passion

Controversial Sexual Attitudes Spoiler Alert: If you consider homosexual behavior to be an abomination in the eyes of God you might want to hoist your skirts and tiptoe past this week’s offering.

I’ve got to tell you one of the more bizarre taboos in our enlightened society is the archaic sanction against gay and/or Lesbian behavior.  The religious bigots claim that gay behavior is an offense in the eyes of God. Indeed there are verses in both the Old and New Testaments specifically forbidding same sex relations.  And no wonder.  When those two collections of tales were jotted down and gathered together the population of the entire world was around 200 million or roughly .6% of the current global population.  Indeed some 70,000 years ago the worldwide population is thought to have dwindled to between 1,000 and 10,000 hardy souls.  Unless you believe the Earth is only 6,000 years old in which case the population back then was 2.  No wonder unproductive copulation was frowned upon.

In addition to the prohibitions spelled out in the Judeo-Christian Bible there appears to have been mass hysteria sweeping through Europe that began around the fourteenth century and peaked in Victorian times regarding those euphemistically categorized “crimes against nature…” or more literally “to which orifice am I legally allowed access?”  Sexual terminology was not even granted a furtive whisper in polite society and Sodomites such as Oscar Wilde were put in jail (England) or worse put to death (original 13 colonies of the United States of America!).  It was during the reign of Henry VIII, the notorious woman’s man, that the statute against homosexuality was written into law.

So it’s better now, eh?  Nope.  In 2015 the great State of California may have a Proposition before the voters that will make it a capital offense to so much as kiss a member of the same sex.  They’re collecting signatures even as we speak.  And yet I daresay each one of us is androgynous to a degree. If men didn’t have at least the merest soupcon of femininity we’d all be total assholes.  And in porn films (so I’m told!) Lesbian behavior commands a premium at the box (pardon the pun!) office.

Rather than asking what causes homosexual behavior and how can this aberrant behavior be stamped out why not ask the more relevant question: who really cares who’s banging whom? Just another way those in charge remain in charge by dividing the minions they manage, whether it be via rules spelled out by the big guns of organized religion or the pols in the statehouse.  Excuse me now.  I’m gonna go kiss a duck.
